Homework

Homework plays an important role in reinforcing learning, developing independence and helping pupils build strong study habits for the future. At King's Wavertree, homework is designed to be manageable, purposeful and closely linked to the curriculum, following a “little and often” approach that supports long-term retention and confidence.

Our Homework Routine

Homework is set every Tuesday and is due the following Tuesday. All homework is completed on pupils’ school Chromebook devices and is automatically set, tracked and marked, ensuring consistency and clarity for pupils and families.

Each week, pupils are set:

  • SPARXReader - set by the English teacher
  • SPARXScience - set by the Science teacher
  • SPARXMaths - set by the subject teacher

All homework tasks are directly linked to what pupils are learning in class, helping them to revisit key knowledge, practise skills and strengthen understanding over time.

Why Homework Matters

Research shows that short, regular homework tasks are far more effective than infrequent, lengthy ones. This “little and often” approach helps pupils:

  • Consolidate learning from lessons
  • Develop independent study habits
  • Build resilience and responsibility
  • Improve long-term memory and recall

Over time, these habits prepare pupils well for future study and examinations.

Support for Pupils

We recognise that pupils may occasionally struggle to meet deadlines. Pupils who do not complete homework on time will be added to a supportive after-school homework session the following Wednesday that runs from 4pm-5pm. This is where they can catch up on missed work and receive guidance from staff. This approach ensures that all pupils are supported to succeed and remain on track with their learning and never fall more than a week behind.
